Announced well in advance, Volvo’s historic Polestar brand presents its first high performance car. It’s Polestar 1, the 600CV and 1000Nm plug-in hybrid that will be produced in China and will only be ordered online from 2019.
Polestar is Volvo’s atelier dedicated to high performance cars that began its business in 1998. In a nutshell, what AMG did for Mercedes and DS for Citroen. For a long time, however, it had been announced that the polar star would have played the role as a stand-alone brand dedicated to high performance cars powered by electric mobility.
So has just been introduced the Polestar 1, a Gran Turismo with 2 + 2 configuration capable of 600CV and 1000Nm maximum torque thanks to a hybrid plug-in unit. But let’s take a step back. The Chinese company Geely has picked the Swedish brand from Ford for some years now, enough time to revamp Volvo with a new design – as we can see on the new V40 and XC60 – and the Crossover XC40 design. To support Polestar, a joint venture was created between Volvo Cars and Zhejiang Geely Holding, a $ 640 million deal that should ensure a competitive start on the market.
Of course, production – and therefore orders – will only start in 2019, so there is enough time to see changes in this particular ranking as well. Technically, the car stands on Volvo’s SPA platform, although 50% of the car has been developed independently by Polestar. For example, we consider the carbon fiber frame, which offers greater torsional rigidity and lower center of gravity. The biggest work, however, was carried out in collaboration with Ohlins, with which Polestar has put in place a sophisticated system of continuous electronic suspensions.
The car will be produced at a plant in Chengdu, China’s Sichuan Province, which will be operational midway through next year to deliver the first Polestar 1 in 2019.
According to Volvo, within the next two decades the electric will be able to account for about 40% of new car sales. That is why the Swedish House’s commercial strategy has already defined two further models. Polestar 2 will be produced from 2019 and will compete with the Tesla Model 3, it will be a medium-sized crossover powered exclusively by electric power, while Polestar 3 will come in as a real SUV.
